quilt as you go...

...is ADDICTING! Penny over at Sew Take A Hike created a great 4-part tutorial so you too can try this uber-cool method! I've made 2 and 1/2 blocks so far and love it! I'm making 10" unfinished blocks which are slightly smaller than Penny's tutorial. Digging thru the scrap pile is somehow relaxing to me, and I can recall what each scrap is from, ahh memory lane!

Both of these blocks are quilted with 1/2" lines, but I think I'll go a bit wider for the remaining blocks... to make it go faster. I also don't snip the thread at the end of each line... I turn 90 degrees, make three stitches, turn 90 degrees, then stitch the next line until the entire piece of fabric is tacked down. I guess the tutorial doesn't specify, but I like doing it this way.

I was going to make a 3 block by 3 block baby quilt, but I may just go bigger! Time will tell... I have an entire list of sewing projects I'd like to get done, but maybe the list can wait! Now, go check it out for your self! There's also a Quilt-as-you-go Flickr Pool!

I'm itching to give this method a go....just waiting to go on holiday's for a week or so starting tomorrow! Bring on the scrap bin! Thanks for the 'turn about stitching' tip.

I agree, it's totally addicting! And I love any project that uses scraps :)

I just read over all of the instructions and am so excited to whip one up and see how it goes. I fear the quilting portion so badly (in traditional quilting) that this should totally work for me.

Cool idea, thanks! I might give this a try, though I think I would use the method where the back gets quilted on as you go, because I don't feel that there's enough stitching holding the backing on on such large blocks... Maybe I can work in rows of blocks or baby-quilt sized blocks to make the hand-sewing-together of the backing pieces easier ;)

Thanks for the inspiration!

Love the tie-on-the-shirt of Eli (in your slideshow).

Cheers,
Christine

I love it! This is on 'the short list' and I even joined the flickr group last week. Thanks for showing your awesome blocks!

Great Blocks! I've become addicted, too. I've managed to make 3 blocks so far and find when I don't have much time to create, playing with the scraps and doing a quilt as you go block fulfills that"creative" need.
